In plain words
MAYA uses 17 US holidays for every property, wherever it is, and has no screen to add another or switch one off. The workaround: when a change's comparisons include a past night that fell on your holiday, click Not a fair comparison? on it, choose Holiday Not on MAYA's List (the first in the list), pick This happens every year around this time and click Set this date aside. The date is left out at once. After the same report from 2 different years, within about 5 days of each other on the calendar, the days around it are left out of comparisons every year, for as long as those reports are under 3 years old. A holiday that moves more than that from year to year (Lunar New Year, Eid, Whit Monday) never builds up to that, so set it aside each year instead. If your holiday never shows up in a comparison, email us its dates and we can set them aside for you, or type prices for the holiday nights yourself.
What MAYA has today
Holidays are used to pick which past nights a night is compared with: a night near Thanksgiving is compared with the same position around Thanksgiving in earlier years, not the same calendar date. The list is New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas (whose stretch runs to December 30, since December 31 is nearer New Year's Day). Nothing outside the US is on it.
The same 17 holidays, each covering a short stretch of nights around the day itself, apply to every property, wherever it is. For a property in Canada, the UK or anywhere else, a night in the stretch around US Thanksgiving or Memorial Day is still compared with the same position around that US holiday in earlier years. An ordinary night is never compared with a night in one of those stretches.
There is no setting to switch a US holiday off yet. Setting its past nights aside takes them out of comparisons. It does not make them ordinary nights.
Your own holidays are different. A night on one that falls outside every US stretch is compared with ordinary nights of the same weekday and time of year. A past night on it can also turn up as a comparison for an ordinary night and make it read slow.
Set your holiday aside, every year
- 1
Find a comparison that used your holiday
On the Change Log tab, open a change with Show the numbers, then Which nights were compared? and List the nights. Look for a past date that fell on your holiday.
- 2
Flag it with the holiday reason
Click Not a fair comparison? on that row and choose Holiday Not on MAYA's List.
- 3
Choose the yearly scope
Select This happens every year around this time. The hint under it says the date is set aside now, and that treating it as a yearly pattern needs reports like this one from 2 different years.
- 4
Set it aside
Click Set this date aside. Repeat when a comparison uses the same holiday from another year.
Setting a date aside needs Revenue Manager access or higher.
If your holiday never shows up
These steps only work on a past night that is listed among a change's compared nights, and only while that change is still in the change log (kept for 90 days, with Older at the bottom to reach the older runs). You cannot choose which nights are compared, so your holiday may never come up. If it does not:
- Email us the dates. Email us your holiday's dates in the last few years and we can set them aside for you with the holiday reason, every year. With dates from 2 different years at about the same date, the days around your holiday are left out of comparisons every year, as if you had set them aside yourself.
- Hold the holiday night's own price. Type a price for it on the Calendar tab, with through… for a run of nights. Setting dates aside never gives the holiday night holiday comparisons of its own, so a typed price is the way to hold it.
What happens
- At once: that date is left out of comparisons and out of the reading of your seasons, from the next run.
- After 2 different years report the same reason near the same time of year: a window of about 5 days either side of the centre is left out of comparisons every year, past and future, for as long as reports from at least 2 different years are under 3 years old. Your corrections at the top of the change log shows the count, for example "We have seen this reported in 1 year of the 2 different years we would want", and then the promoted line once it repeats.
- 3 years after you make a report, it stops counting. When that leaves reports from fewer than 2 different years, the promoted line goes away and the holiday is compared again, so set it aside again when it comes up in newer comparisons. Your corrections still lists your old reports.
- The holiday night itself is still priced by your rules like any other night. Setting it aside stops it being used as a comparison for other nights. It does not give it holiday comparisons of its own. Hold its price with a typed price if you want to.
