The rule playground

5 min readRulesUpdated October 12, 2026

In plain words

The playground below runs a rule on a made-up week at The Harbour Inn, one night at a time, with the same maths a real run uses. You need no account and nothing is saved. Signed in, two links take the rule's conditions and amount to your own property, on your own room types: Try it on your own week opens the Rate Simulator's Week view on your own calendar, and Open in the rule builder fills in the rule builder. Neither saves anything.

Try it on a sample week

Pick a metric, a compare and a value, a direction and an amount, and the room types. The choices are the rule builder's own, with Booking speed (recommended) and the advanced ones marked as they are there, except Booked so far vs usual: it compares with a property's own past nights, and the sample week has none. + Add condition adds another condition, one of each kind. Tick Change prices on different room types to measure one set and change another.

The week is The Harbour Inn's, Monday November 9 to Sunday November 15, 2026, read on the Sunday before, so the nights are 1 to 7 days out. The inn has 12 Standard rooms at $150, 6 Deluxe at $200 and 2 Suites at $300, and a Meeting Room that is not a room. Each night has its own bookings and its own . Thursday is exactly 80% full, which is not more than 80%.

Each night shows the price before and after the rule, with a dot where the rule acts. Click a night to read why, in the change log's words: what the rule changed and the reason, why it was not met ("It was 80% full. Your rule needs more than 80%."), or why it did not apply.

Try itBuild a rule and watch it on a sample week, night by night.

"Busy nights" raised this night 10%, from $150.00 to $165.00.

It was 85% full, past the 80% mark you set.

Try it on your own week

Signed in, Try it on your own week opens the Rate Simulator on its Week view, with the rule's conditions, direction and amount filled in as the test rule, named "Busy nights" (the playground has no name box, so rename it there). The sample's room types aren't yours, so it starts on all of your room types: pick yours there. A rule that measures a different set of room types from the ones it changes opens only in the rule builder.

The Rate Simulator has a Night and Week switch at the top. The Week view, headed "Your week, what if", shows seven nights from the date under From (tonight to start) for the room type you pick. Each night starts from your calendar: the rooms booked and the rooms you can sell that night, and the price it starts from (a price you typed, or the rate your rules last started from). The average rate booked is read as that starting price, not what guests paid. Pickup, , recent bookings and booked so far vs usual aren't on your calendar: pickup starts at 0, and a booking speed, recent bookings or booked so far vs usual rule never acts in the Week view, your included. To try one, open a night in the night form and set them there. Each night shows its price before and after the rules ticked under Rules in play and your test rule, with a dot where the test rule acts.

A night with a price set by hand shows a dash and is not tried: a typed price is a fresh start for your rules, which one run on its own can't follow. A night with no starting price shows a dash too.

Click a night to open it in the night form. Its numbers come in from your calendar, each box tinted with "From your calendar" and the day it was read when you point at it. Typing over a box takes its tint off, and picking another stay date takes them all off.

The "?" beside the heading says what it leaves out: every matching pickup rule adds on top of the others, and waits, Skips, holds from going live and prices typed by hand aren't followed. It is a what-if, never the reason a price is what it is. For that, read Find out why a price changed.

Open in the rule builder

Open in the rule builder fills in + Add a rule on the Rules tab with the rule's conditions, direction and amount, named "Busy nights", with Change prices on different room types ticked when it was. Room types start as every type that counts as a room: pick yours there. In the Rate Simulator, Open in rule builder beside Save This Rule does the same with the test rule, its room types included. It is a new rule: nothing is saved until you click Add Rule, and then the window that shows the days it will change opens as it always does. From the Rate Simulator, if the builder already holds a name, an amount, a direction or a rule you are editing, MAYA asks before replacing it.

On a Mews property, a rule with Rooms left to sell fills in nothing, because the builder doesn't offer that condition there yet, and the builder shows the note "The rule builder doesn't offer Rooms left to sell on Mews yet, so nothing was filled in." It fills in nothing either while MAYA can't read your property's system, with a note that says so (Rooms left to sell).
