Try a rule before turning it on

4 min readHow do I...Updated October 12, 2026

In plain words

Open the Rate Simulator tab, set up a made-up night, click + Build a test rule and fill it in. The What would happen table shows what each room type would become. Nothing is saved until you click Save This Rule, which adds it to the Rules tab switched Off, or Open in rule builder and then Add Rule there, which adds it On after showing the days it will change. Turn it On when you are ready: the switch first shows the days it will change on your real calendar, and you apply or skip the price adjustments.

Try the rule

  1. 1

    Set up the night

On the Rate Simulator tab, under The night, pick a Stay date (it starts 30 days ahead) and a Booking speed level. Leave it on Not enough history and rules stay quiet, which is what happens on a night MAYA cannot measure.

  2. 2

    Set up the rooms

Under Your rooms, each room type that counts as a room has a Base price (starting at the nearest price MAYA has published), an Occupancy percentage (starting at 70%) and a Picked up count. Its floor and ceiling show under Guardrails. Change the numbers to the night you want to test.

  3. 3

    Build the test rule

Under Rules in play, click + Build a test rule. Give it a Rule name, one to nine conditions, a direction under Then (raise the rate or lower the rate), an amount under By, a Unit (percent or fixed amount ($), with your property's own currency symbol, such as fixed amount (€) in euros) and the Room types.

  4. 4

    Read the result

The What would happen table shows each room type's Base, what it Becomes, the Change, and Because, which names the rules that fired. A price held at a limit is tagged "held at your floor" or "held at your ceiling". The Didn't fire list says why a rule stayed quiet, for example "Conditions not met" with what it saw.

  5. 5

    Save it, switched off

Click Save This Rule. A green line reads "Rule Added to Rules Tab and Initialized as Disabled". Until you press it, the rule exists only on this screen. On the Rules tab, switch it On when you are ready. A window shows the days it will change on your real bookings, "X days will be affected by this rule.": Apply price adjustments changes them from the next run, Skip price adjustments leaves them as they are until the rule stops being true on a day and then becomes true again, and every other night works as with Apply. To change it first, click Edit on its row. Read Turning a rule on, Apply or Skip.

Saving a rule needs Revenue Manager access or higher.

On your own week

Switch the simulator to Week to see the test rule on seven of your own nights, each starting from your calendar, with a dot where it acts. Click a night to open it in the night form, seeded. To add the rule as a new rule that is on, click Open in rule builder beside Save This Rule: it fills in the rule builder, nothing is saved, and Add Rule there shows the days it will change first. Without an account, the rule playground runs a rule on a sample week.

What the simulator does and does not do

The math is the same a real run uses, so the numbers are what your rules would produce for the night you typed. Your existing rules are all ticked under Rules in play, switched-off ones included, so you can see what turning one on would do. Untick any to leave it out of the test.

Three things it simplifies, as the note at the foot of the page says:

  • A (one without a or condition) fires on the way into its condition and holds, so the table shows where the night settles rather than each step.
  • When several booking speed or pickup rules match, a real run lets only one of them act on each night and room type, while the simulator adds them all.
  • A booking speed or pickup rule that is still true once its wait is over adjusts the night again, which the simulator shows only once.

It is one run, not where a night ends up over a week.
